Communities — Stupid to You, Charming for Me

One of my favourite ways to browse the web is reddit. I love learning of quirky, niche communities that have huge, active followings. One of them I stumbled across was r/Chips.

Its just a community of people posting the chips they eat that day, for many it’s a silly endeavour but I tried posting once and was pleasantly surprised at the feedback my post got.

I was given upvotes and encouraging remarks, it’s silly thing but really goes to show how die hard some fanatics can be about the matter.

The best community that I personally like to engage on is r/blackberry.

It’s devices are nostalgic fossils of a past where thumbs would exhaust themselves typing on physical keys, and I thought i was the only one who still admired them.

But come to find there is a large community of like-minded individuals who feel the same nostalgic love about these phones that I do. I learned of hobbyists who started their own open source blackberry software and shared it with the community, companies who launch blackberry clones on kickstarter and the community eats it up. It’s a shame what happened to blackberry’s products but equally strange that the community is so feverish about their products even to this day.

One thing that stands out to these communities is how passionate and dedicated the members are. They truly love what they’re involved in, whether it’s sharing pictures of chips or discussing vintage BlackBerry devices. It’s amazing to see how these communities can bring people together, even if their interests may seem silly or niche to others. It just goes to show that there’s a community for everyone out there, no matter how “stupid” it may seem to some. And who knows, maybe there’s a community out there for me that I haven’t discovered yet. The possibilities are endless.
